Guides · the bad-deal math

Sometimes the right claim is no claim.

In Verizon's own forum, a parent telling the story of a denied tablet claim adds the detail that reframes it: the tablet cost about $80 — and the deductible was $99. Even approved, that claim was a loss before it started. Nobody selling insurance publishes this arithmetic. Here it is, whole.

The three costs of a claim

  1. The deductible: $0 (screen repair, eligible) up to $400 (AT&T Tier 6). This is the only cost anyone quotes you.
  2. The claim slot: on capped plans (3 per 12 months on most), a filed claim is spent whether it pays $40 or $900. A slot burned on a cheap phone is a slot missing when the expensive phone is lost. On unlimited plans (Verizon Mobile Protect; T-Mobile damage) this cost is zero — which is why the math differs by plan.
  3. The sunk premiums are gone either way — $384–$600 over two years at typical prices. They argue for using the plan when it's worth it, never for filing a claim whose payout is below its price.

The rule

Don't file when the deductible meets or beats what the phone is worth (used-market value, honestly assessed) — and think twice when the deductible plus the slot's value beats a local repair quote. A screen replaced at a local shop for $120, with no slot spent and no refurb lottery, beats a $99 deductible plus a claim on a capped plan more often than the claim line will ever say.
